Welcome

The Norwegian Elghund Worldwide (NEW) is a group with the mission of preserving the Elghund (Elkhound) breed through education and contributions to elghund health research. NEW is not a club and is not affiliated with any kennel club or parent breed club. The site is intended for a diverse audience of those interested in elghunds. Contributions and suggestions are always welcome. This site will provide a repository of information as it is provided -- if you see content missing that you can contribute, please email submissions@elghund.info.

THE NORWEGIAN ELGHUND

"Elg" in Norwegian means "Moose" and "Hund" means "Dog," so the literal English translation would be Moosedog. The Norsk Elghund, Gra (gray) is one of nine hunting spitz breeds well known in Scandinavia. The Elghund is square in profile with prick ears and a tightly curled tail held over his back. His coat is gray, dense, and smooth lying.
